Musical Earth Day Activities

Happy Earth Day everyone!

Today we have a chance to stop and think about just how wonderful our planet is. Here are some fun, musical activities you can do to celebrate! You can do the full activity, a part of it, or just watch the videos. Have fun and only do what works for you.

1. Rap an Earth Day poem

This man is amazing! He's taken a popular Dr. Suess book (the Lorax) and added a musical twist. When you rap, you don't read the words like you would normally, but you do it in a musical way to the beat. Try following along to this beat (click here) and see if you can rap the following earth day poem:

Everyday is Earth Day

Everyday is Earth Day, If it's cold or wet or hot Pitch in to save the planet It's the only one we've got.

If you have a favourite Earth Day book at home (or any book you'd like to try), see if you can try rapping it! It's a fun way to practice reading.

2. Find Cool Earth Sounds

This video shows the sounds that a lake can make when it's thawing and unfreezing in the springtime. A simple activity you can do at home is to fill a glass with warm/hot water and then drop three ice-cubes in the glass.

When you hold your ear really close to the glass, what do you hear?

What other types of ice/water/snow makes sound?

3. Sing along to this Earth Day Song

If there's a new song that I don't know yet, I like to learn the chorus (the main part that repeats - in this song, it's the "we're going green" part). Once I know the chorus, I can sing along to the chorus and just dance my way through the rest of the song that I don't know!

Are there dancing actions you can create while you sing the chorus?

4. Write your Own Earth Day Poem

You can use your imagination and write a poem for Earth Day. First, you have to fill in the lines below.... (you can write them on a separate piece of paper, try to think of things that are related to earth day)

E is for _______________ (eg. environment, eagles)

A is for _______________ (eg. apples, action)

R is for _______________ (eg. responsibility, recycling)

T is for _______________ (eg. together, trash)

H is for _______________(eg. heart, helping)

Once you've written your poem down, you can use one of your homemade percussion instruments to play along with your poem! Or if you'd like, you can add a melody and turn it into a song.

As always, I'd love to see the music you're making at home, if you want to share any learning with me, I'd be so happy to see it! Email me pictures/videos at rdochstader@sd57.bc.ca

Happy Earth Day everyone,
